entering a WALK ONLY marathon in paradise!

Yes, several WoW power walkers are committed to walking either 21 or 42 kilometres in the 4th Annual Great Bermuda Walking Marathon, November 16, 2003. This is an event that celebrates walking. That means no early start before the “real” start - no making your way to a place behind the slowest pace bunny! Walkers of all styles and speeds are welcome, says race organizer Brooks Johnson. There will be no judging for technical violations as there is in race walking events and all finishers will receive a 3.5-inch medal! All this and you’re in Bermuda! Could it get any better?

If you are interested in this event, get in touch with us. We are trying to organize an accommodation package for all WoW power walkers.

Closer to home…
Training schedules are posted on the website for those of you entering the half marathons at the Quebec City Marathon, Scotiabank Waterfront Marathon, and Casino Niagara Marathon.

The Scotiabank Waterfront event will have an early start for walkers entering the full marathon and while we only learned of this recently, making it too late for many of you to prepare, it’s good to remember for 2004. This has been a good summer in southern Ontario for training – not too hot!

WoW Instructors stand out!

Why WoW? If you’ve taken a WoW power walking course you know. Still, some of you may be wondering what makes our walkers stand out! Technique, of course!

At WoW we have worked hard to develop a course that trains participants to truly master a skill – a walking gait that allows you to achieve an excellent fitness level while reducing your risk for the injuries that can occur because of poor technique or excessive impact to joints.

Also, all of our coaches are certified through either Can-fit-pro (www.canfitpro.com) or the American Council on Exercise (www.acefitness.org) as group fitness leaders or personal trainers. This means you have access to leaders that know about the anatomy of walking, the physiology of exercising, stretching, strength training and much more. You are in professional hands.

You will discover how knowledgeable and motivating coaches make a difference - providing you with a fun and challenging, yet personalized, training experience.

WoW Tip! Ginger for great results!

Tired of always drinking unadulterated water to hydrate? Why not brew yourself up a cup of healing water?

Ginger TeaThis is possibly my most favourite drink – grate 1 tablespoon of fresh ginger into a teapot or large measuring cup. Pour boiling water on top. Let steep for at least five minutes. Strain and drink. Voila!

You are consuming one of the most ancient healing medicines. Chinese herbal medicine has used ginger for centuries to purge the body of viruses and colds and to stimulate the digestive system. More modern scientific studies have found ginger to contain anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-histamine, anti-inflammatory, and anti-oxidant properties. You can’t get much more “anti” than that!

When you buy ginger, look for a root that has few twists and joints with a smooth skin. And if you don’t like to drink it, apparently 1 tablespoon of powdered ginger in your bath is also soothing!

Save this date - Sunday, September 7, 2003!
The next coffee and muffin walk will again be held in High Park, Toronto. What a beautiful spot!

We’ll meet at 7:45 beside the parking lot for the Grenadier Park Café. There will be maps for 21km (distance for those training for Scotiabank Waterfront), 14km (distance for those training for Casino Niagara and The Weekend to End Breast Cancer). If we are going to have enough muffins, marathon cookies, and coffee for everyone, please RSVP to info@wowcompany.net. We welcome anyone who receives this newsletter, whether you’ve taken a WoW course or not!
