WoW in BermudaWoW power walkers tear up the course in Bermuda! The 2003 fall season ended on a glorious note for 13 WoW power walkers at The Great Bermuda Walking Marathon and Half Marathon. Walking 21 and 42 km routes seems easier when you get stunning ocean views, swaying palm trees, and church bells ringing. The day proved to be warm and slightly overcast with a light rain that was welcome by the walkers. WoW power walkers looked strong out on the course with amazing form that revealed the inner athlete in them all! Check results under Walkers Talking at www.wowpowerwalking.com.

Winter Solstice Coffee and Muffin Walk
Fight off the effects of limited daylight! We’ll be boosting our serotonin levels with some exercise and high quality carbohydrates at the Winter Solstice Coffee and Muffin Walk! All WoW power walkers – past, present, future - friends, spouses, children, and pets are welcome.

Lee - or was that Santa - will be waiting for you to finish the Winter Solstice Walk!If you’ve never walked with us before, this is the perfect opportunity. If you have walked with us, it’s a chance to meet walkers from other classes, try a new route, enjoy some delicious home-made snacks and, in this case, escape the holiday madness for a bit! Last year we asked for cash donations to the Oakville Heritage Trails. We are asking the same this year. Whatever you donate, WoW will match your donation. Everyone who donates will have a chance to win a special prize! At WoW we believe in getting people outside. If a community has great trails, people tend to get outside! Let’s support Oakville’s attempts to maintain these fantastic trails which attract walkers, runners, strollers, and families from all over the GTA.

Meet at 7:30am (sharp!) on Saturday December 20 at the Lakeside Park (see directions below) in downtown Oakville. Maps for 5km, 8km, & 12km routes will be distributed! You enjoy the walk at your preferred pace, and we’ll be at the end with a gingerbread muffin and warm beverage for you. Santa costumes are optional. RSVP’s much appreciated!

Directions: Lakeside Park is at the bottom of Navy Street right at Lake Ontario. To get there from the east exit the QEW at Trafalgar Road. Follow Trafalgar Road to Lakeshore Road and turn right (heading west). At the second traffic light, you will be at Navy Street. Turn left (heading south). Continue until Navy Street ends and you will see the park on your left. To get to the park from the west, exit off the QEW at Dorval, follow Dorval south to Lakeshore. Turn left (heading east) and follow Lakeshore to the 4th set of traffic lights at Navy Street. Turn right (heading south) and continue until Navy Street ends at the lake. The park is on your left.

Courses are now online for winter and spring! You’ll find all of your favourite programs and a couple of new items and locations! In January, Lee will lead a 2-hour workshop called WoW! Food is my Friend. You will want to join us, if you are interested in rethinking your relationship with food. We’ll talk about strategies to make this a relationship that works for your body, mind, and spirit. Attendance will be limited to allow for a workshop atmosphere. In the spring, we’ll be offering WoW! Tots in Tow. This course will be for parents with tots in strollers. What a great way for new parents to get in shape, get outside, and socialize! And just a reminder that Shari Brannen is teaching WoW! Marathon Training in Unionville starting in January.

all work and no play!

Of course, it wasn’t all hard work! With Bermuda just a short 2.5 hour flight from Toronto, everyone could get a full complement of sight-seeing accomplished over the long race weekend. Post-race celebrations included hanging out at the beach, Bermudian dinner including the local Dark and Stormy beverage, and more sightseeing before heading home the day after the race. Stuart and Sonja highly recommend staying for a few days after the race to really relax and enjoy the place. For more details, view the pictures and read Lee’s journal on the website.

New stuff! You've been saying that you want people to know that this power walking thing is not “just” walking. So, we’ve made some very hip, black, 100% cotton long-sleeved T-shirts that can be worn for training or for casual. They are available right now for $24.95 + taxes! Let everyone know that you aren’t just a walker - you're a WoW Power Walker! Also, for sale are some handy tote bags with water bottle holder and fuzzy hats, head bands and neckwarmers! Our new website will be online within a couple of weeks complete with an online WoW Store that allows Internet credit transactions

WoW Tip: Power walking hills! Hills will become your best friend if you know how to approach them. First, your stride needs to be very short and your posture should stay tall. Any lean must come from the ankles not the waist. Maintaining posture is easier if your eyes are up! When your foot lands in front of you your leg should be straight. Your heel should land solidly with your toe up – a flat-footed landing means your foot is momentarily acting as a brake. With your heel down and your toe up, you can roll through that foot and get more power from your push-off! If you're training for the Round the Bay Road Race, practice hills!

New long-distance number 1-877-WOW-WALK (1-877-969-9255)!
