While a thousand words would not be sufficient to tell the story
behind this photo, suffice it to say you are looking at an inspirational
show of strength, determination, and spousal encouragement –
or could that be cruelty?! Ah, if only every race featured bacon,
sausages and home-fries afterward!
Wendy and Dave Joyce finishing the Jingle
Bell 5k race in Burlington.
Cheers to a superb year!
Chilly Half Marathon Burlington, Around the Bay Road
Race Hamilton, Tough Ass Half Marathon Burlington,
Mississauga Half and Full Marathons, National Capital
Half and Full Marathons Ottawa, OTMH Classic 5k (speed
demons!), (Half) Marathon By the Sea St. John New Brunswick,
(Half) Marathon des Deux Rives Quebec City, Toronto
Scotiabank Waterfront Half and Full Marathons, Dublin Marathon,
Casino Niagara Half Marathon, Detroit Free Press Half
Marathon, Paris (ON) Grand Half Marathon, New
York City Full Marathon, Jingle Bell 5k. This is an
impressive list of events and all featuring WoW power walkers
strutting their most excellent form!
While simply being entered in such an exhaustive list of events
is fantastic, when you take a look at the results and see how many
of these finishes were personal best times, you’ll get a sense
of the commitment our walkers have shown to personal challenge and
excellence. No race spectators witnessing these incredible people
would ever say they are “just walking”.
Anticipating an even better 2005!
So what will our walkers be up to that could compare with
2004?
Think Roman Coliseum. A hardy and dedicated group raising
funds for the Canadian
Diabetes Association (CDA) are in the middle of training to
walk 42 kilometres on March 13 over the cobblestone streets of Rome
(it’s a bit challenging to find cobblestones here in Ontario
to do some event-specific training!). Wish them well as they head
off into their longest training walks through January and February.
(Or, better yet, show your support by donating to the CDA!)
Think rugged California coast. In April, 20 WoW
Power walkers are flying to the west coast of the continent
to walk the fabled Big Sur coast of California. Yes, we begin training
in January to prepare ourselves for the hills of the Big
Sur International Marathon 21-mile Power Walk. Be sure to check
out my
journal describing the 2004 event and then mark September 1,
2005 on your calendar to enter the 2006 race! This race is worth
every penny, every training walk, every blister, and every worn-out
shoe!
Of course we’re looking forward to seeing a growing contingent
of WoW people out at the local events. Plan your year now so you
won’t be at a loss for a New Year’s resolution on December
31. Help a friend who’s looking for a resolution: introduce
them to power walking (or buy them a WoW organic cotton hankie so
at least their nose will feel better!).
