WoW - What's Up March Newsletter

January 21 , 2004

The great news! New website! Rumours have been swirling for months and, undoubtedly, there are a few disbelievers out there but on Friday, January 23 you will be able to visit the all new www.wowpowerwalking.com. It will feature your old favourites such as great pics and the Walkers Talking message board with improved paths to find out about our courses as well as online payment by credit card! You’ll also find photos and short biographies of all the WoW power walking coaches

The not-so-great news! During the excitement and chaos of our website re-design, we somehow deleted all of the Walkers Talking membership information and, even worse, the recipe for Marathon cookies! That means everyone needs to re-register (choose your own password). It takes only a moment and you will be a member again with 48 hours of registering. All Walkers Talking members must have taken a WoW course but anyone visiting the website will have access to the Marathon cookie recipe under the Nibblies topic.

“…if you aren’t active on a regular basis, you can’t achieve your true potential” – Jay Kimiecik, The Intrinsic Exerciser
As soon as I read this line in Kimiecik’s book, I thought there might be some WoW power walkers out there who could support it with a personal story. While it has been so incredibly inspiring to see you out there walking half marathons, marathons, 60-km 2-day walks, 120 km four-days marches, and even personal journey’s like walking from Montreal to Ottawa, still the greatest thrill for me is to see a WoW power walker just out for a walk.

I like to think you are out there because you have been infected with the joy of being outside, the joy of having mastered a skill, the joy of challenge, and the joy of feeling good and strong! Most importantly, you have come to enjoy the journey as much as the destination (even though I admit to a weakness for a good cappuccino at the end of a great walk!).

So, here’s your chance to set the record straight! Tell us your power walking story and you could win a sporty (and coveted!) WoW Power Walking tote bag! As well as writing an inspirational walking piece, winners must answer the following skill testing question – “Which way is left?”

WoW What a Tote Bag!Deadline for entries is Valentine’s Day February 14, 2004.

Commit! Avoid spring race price increases. Register for the Chilly Half Marathon and the Round the Bay Road Race before February 1 to avoid paying an increased registration fee. Fees for the National Capital event go up on February 15 and on February 29 for the Mississauga Marathon.

Flamingo Kick Step 1WoW Tip :: What are they doing standing on one leg?

WoW power walkers enrolled in WoW! Just Get Outside are being treated to some excellent supplementary stability exercises this winter. Aside from some initial concerns over our public displays of flamingo-like behaviour, everyone is admitting that it is truly beneficial and surprisingly challenging! So, here’s a how-to guide on one of my favourites.

1/ Stand on one leg. (This, alone, is good to practice and even fun!)

2/ Ensure you are balanced over the heel of the leg on which you are standing. Pull abdominal muscles in toward your spine.

3/ Focus your eyes on the ground about 8 feet ahead of you.

Flamingo Kick Step 14/ Pull the opposite knee up and then out to the side. Push that heel out to your side slowly and with conviction (!) as if you are kicking someone in slow motion or closing a door with style (an alternative & less aggressive visualization).

Flamingo Kick Step 15/ For an extra challenge: look out at your heel every time you push it away from you.

6/ For an extra, extra challenge: hook a resistance tube around the foot that you are pushing out sideways and hold it tight with your hands.

7/ Repeat 8-12 times on each leg.
